Axle DL: 180
Pinch hold with 45s: 45 seconds

Ironmind loading pin substituted for V bar: 190 lb. Really low, but lifted it from the floor.

Strict BB curl: 150. Nearly popped my eyes out, but that’s a PR.

Good times. Infinite room for improvement.

Seeing as how these numbers are all unofficial, I decided not to try and break any world records or anything. With that said, be amazed…

One hand deadlift with a Fat Gripz: 95lbs (not surprised)

2″ vertical bar: 165lbs (a crushing defeat)

Two hand pinch and hold with two 45lbs plates: 15 seconds (you cannot have cake and ice cream)

Barbell curl: 95lbs (…don’t look at me that way)

Despite the glaringly low numbers, this ended up being a great learning experience for me, on top of being a lot of fun!

I had no real approach going into this, and that, as it seems, turned out to be my undoing. Apparently there’s something to the strategy of all this. (who knew?)

First, I did the one hand deadlift. I was neither surprised nor disappointed with the outcome. It was about what I expected. So, confident and undaunted, I moved on.

The rest of the lifting that afternoon, however, would not be so “uneventful.” Enter, the 2″ V bar. It was, for me, where everything fell apart! Now, I train the V bar from time to time, and I really like it. I’ve come a long way (pr before the events: 180lbs) from where I started (a wobbly 70lbs), so I felt pretty good about it. My third attempt was 165, and it felt easy. Easy enough that I was ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that I could pull 200 on my fourth attempt and net a 20lb pr. As it turns out, being “absolutely certain” of something has little to do with whether or not that something will ACTUALLY happen. So yeah, the 200… didn’t move. At all. But! The effort of TRYING to get it to move… wore my hands the freak out! Like really… the freak out! We’re talking game over here! At the time, I wasn’t fully aware of the degree to which I had just exhausted my meat hooks(medical term). I moved on to the pinch lift and hold and I knew FOR SURE that I wasn’t going to embarrass myself on this one. I train pinch deadlifts and rows as often as they test well for me, and yeah, I don’t mean to brag, but I do alright. (of course by “alright,” I mean, “can actually do them”) So I chalked up, sandwiched the stupid plates and… man, I couldn’t even get ‘em off the floor. What!? How could this be?! Oh yeah… I just strained my guts out trying to choke that there V bar off the ground! Determined not to accept defeat in the face of adversity, and intent on at least coming away with a time to post, I suffered my humiliation. It took all the strength that I had left to hold those two plates in the air for 15 lousy seconds. (I set them down very nicely however!) By the time I got to the curl, I was done for. All the high tension techniques in world wouldn’t have helped me out at that point. (but aren’t curls useless anyway?) So there it is. All in all… Freaking awesome!

The highlight of the day, for me, was that I took a fifth attempt on the V bar to see if I could pull 190 (like I should have done on my fourth attempt), and I got it! A 10lb pr! Happy day! (You can now have cake and ice cream!)

Thanks, Adam! I’ll be looking forward to next time!

Nigel, that has to be one of the funniest results post I’ve ever read. Thanks for the laughs, and 165 isn’t bad on the 2″ vbar. My max is 205 and I couldn’t even get 163 off the ground two inches. So, I feel your pain.

Did either of you test or have a couple warm up lifts to see which hand was stronger for the V-bar? I always do this for competitions when only one hand is to be used because sometimes you can surprise yourself and your stronger hand is not actually the strongest on every given day.

I did my V-bar left handed even though my strongest is usually the right, which was a good choice because I couldn’t budge my final weight with my right hand that day!

Kevin Knapp January 24, 2012 at 10:27 am

Kris,
I had the same experience with the Vbar, right hand couldn’t budge 190lb off the floor..I almost didn’t even try with the left(video shows this) then came back and pulled 190lb on the left pretty easily.

This has happened twice now in the past few months.

Nigel January 26, 2012 at 9:18 pm

No. Since I was uncertain as to how that sort of thing (warm up lifts) would be handled at a real meet, I just went and did the lifts. In retrospect, it would have been to my advantage to do so. Thanks for the tip!

At an actual competition you can have as many warm up lifts as you want (within reason I guess?), I tend to get some lifts in a little lower than my first lift just to “get a feel”, and in some cases to help me decide whether to go lefty or righty :)

Nigel January 26, 2012 at 9:35 pm

Ahhh… There’s that word again… “Pain.” The uncomfortable blessing I aim to resolve with every test! I’ve had some MAJOR pain problems clear up in the last year and a half using the things I’ve learned from Adam. I just happen to have a lot more that are still lingering on! Because of certain issues, I have to be very careful with anything grip related, which kinda bums me out. It keeps my numbers laughable(apparently!). I’m really focusing on getting those things out of the way though because I’ve come to discover that I love grip! (“What could be more awesome than picking things up and putting them back down?”) Anyway, I’m glad you got a laugh man! Good luck with the next events!
