For those that are interested in training this skill, you can first practice the “push pull grip”, where the bottom hand pushes at the pole through a straight arm and the top arm pulls the pole in opposition, in a standing position. Also making a strong V with the arms using the push pull grip, jumping into a knees tucked, one leg straight, straddle, or full flag for a second or two and lowering smoothly, is a great way to ease the muscles and tendons into this trick.
Although I don’t weight train anymore, when I first learned the flag I trained lats and shoulders quite a bit in addition to what I mention above.
