“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”- Steve Jobs

I just don’t get all this idolisation of Steve Jobs and Apple. All they have ever done is take an existing idea, make it prettier / easier to use for the masses and then stomp all over their competition.
They play dirty (trying to get all their competition banned from sale over silly patents even when they infringe others patents) and my 10 year old MP3 player still has features that Apple products don’t have.
Anyway, yes its a shame some guy died, but people are dying all over the world every day and most of those people didn’t roll around in millions of dollars… grow up and do something with your own life instead of idolising this guy!
Kris,
Jobs was an artist and a scientist who put his brush to a company instead of to lyrics or paintings. What he created in Apple and the products that have sprung from that are nothing short of remarkable. They have made the (first) world a better place, it’s that simple. He can be mentioned in the same breath as Edison and Disney. Can you say that about people who die every day?
Kris, with all the respect – I have totally different point of view. I could list hundreds of differences, innovations, totally different approaches etc. I could talk about SJ vision that he started years, years before he was able to hold actuall got technology and products in his hands.
As for the patents wars – yes, that’s utterly silly and stupid as long as other are not doing the same thing. At that time you have to do it as well at least to some extend. If you are referring to Samsung products – they are so similar, it’s striking. And yes APPL is trying to stop them because, well, they look like Apple products – from icons to charger.
As for features of your MP3 thing – I still don’t understand people who needs cards slots on iPad, editing features on iPod and access to file system on iPhone. Ask my grandmother about these and she would either laugh or look very confused.
A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing” -> this quote is not from SJ and Apple people but from Antoine de Saint Exupéry. And it’s so true.
I see a lot of guys hating on Jobs at the moment; many of them seem to think it makes them look “edgy” or “counter-culture”… All this “iPhone and iPod is a piece of shit blah blah blah”… What about fucking Pixar, mate? None of these guys have anything to say about that. Windows has also caught up in a lot of areas (finally, although Windows still can’t really hold a candle to Mac OS), so a lot of people these days don’t understand what all the Mac vs PC fuss is all about—but there are very few people who were already involved in design and publishing 15 or more years ago that have anything bad to say about Steve Jobs.
