September 2011 Wrap Up

by adam on October 1, 2011

What a great month of training

Trained 21 out of 30 days.
Total lbs lifted 698,549 lbs.

Completed two Mash Monster certifications (MM2 & MM3)

This month I became the 13th man to close the Mash Monster 3, a gripper which has defeated a number of very strong men in the past.

Competed in a grip contest

Body comp- lost another 1 lbs of body fat, gained 1 lbs of lean mass. Arms, shoulders, legs up in measurement.

Schedule changes have been some what difficult working a night shift several days out of the week. My sleep schedule was thrown for a bit of a loop but it is getting back to my average.

Very happy with the progress with the challenge dumbbells. It’s interesting how they lose their mystique once you own them, and can lift them whenever you want to. I picked up my two replicas last week, and the very first night I was able to deadlift them at once fairly easily, and get in some distance with the farmers walk. I honestly thought it would be harder.

My gripper volume is climbing up again. I reduced training frequency with them in preparation for WSH and the MM certs. Realistically I have made far more progress keeping the reps and frequency high. I will attempt the MM4 the week following WSH leg 3, and plan to attempt the MM5 before the Thanksgiven weekend. I find working with the setting block is very helpful but it tires out my hands far faster by comparison.

My pinch lift is very strong right now. I hit my first ever 237 in training this month, and had two singles that day. I am expecting to be able to get in some big pulls for the final contest in the series.

Two newer things I have been working on this month have been returning to mace swinging, and tossing a sandbell. I really like these sandbells a lot. Very cool little pieces of equipment.

How about you? What is notable from your month of training in September? Did you accomplish any major or minor goals? What have you done with your body composition this last 30 days?

Deadlifting is the main lift aiming for 3xbw in 2012….

BW goes up along with appetite but need to find more efficient ways to get proper nutrition… heavy manual labor daytime along with a ridiculous metabolism makes gaining weight interesting….

It’s one of the hardest ways to be- you are lifting more at work than many people lift in the gym. What strategies have you tried to get better food day today?

the only thing so far is trying to bring a couple of “thai protein shakes” with me to work to have between breakfast and lunch but have to get better at stocking up on stuff I crave daily… I´m not much for the artificial supplements stuff…

Accomplished my major goal of walking

Major PR, how is the rehab coming along Sean?

I’ve had exponential progress in the last week. Went from barely able to go a block on one crutch to walking for half a mile with only some mild fatigue. Some very light and limited range of motion extension work is starting to test well also.

I became Finland’s, if not the world’s best lifter in a lift called half moon (single hand). It’s a halved pipe fused into a plate, resembling a half moon. Extremely hard to lift! Now the biggest catch is that I had tried it only once previously. This second time happened at Toni Laine’s Monstergrab competition. Here are the stats, his site is not in English but I’m sure you’ll understand: http://www.monsterikoura.com/tilastot-MAX-MIEHET/puolikuu.html

I noticed a huge increase in overall volume I can do after upping my protein intake. One ain’t building shit with mere 50 grams a day, so…

Whoops, I meant SECOND BEST, not the BEST, haha!

Send me some photos or a video of this lift Tomas

Consider it done.

Closed the CoC#3 for the first time a couple of days ago.

Guess that’s my biggest achievment this month : )

Some PRs worth mentioning from last month:
190 kg deadlift @ 68 kg BW, aiming for 3xBW now (this was the first max deadlift I’ve pulled in a long time, previous best was 180 kg @ 80 kg BW!)
Freestanding handstand pushup after only 1 week of handstand training
KB military press 32 kg x 4 left, 3 right
20 pistols with left leg (first time I’ve done these in a long time, last time I tried I did like 12)
Chin-up + 50 kg, still can’t do a one arm chin though
+ obstacle courses and some endurance training, mainly rucking, and some martial arts and parkour stuff

I did nothing too fancy, tested exercises most of the time, and tried to PR in every exercise I did, every day, by increasing intensity, density or volume. I’m still not getting this GM stuff completely right (sometimes I do exercises I feel like doing without testing, and often I push too hard), but I’m working on it. Getting better at getting better.

Axle

the fact you know you are doing that means you are still in a position to make even more progress when you want to by testing more, and using less effort.

Well done, I say your MM0 video today. The MM1 is not so bad at all. If you can get two or three reps at a time from a parallel set you will easily close it. If you want a side project it is a pretty fun to go after.

Biggest accomplishment this month was discovering trends in my training. Such as lifts that seem to always pair well with each other and that most lifts seem to test well for 3-5 week blocks before I nees to switch it up. Also been messing with my Met-Flex and results have been crazy. Shit after writing this up, I see I had a pretty good month.

Oct PRs:
- Met-Flex: Weight 201lbs, lightest Ive ever been in last 8 years, first 6 pack in 10 years. Been really expanding my eating this month and still seem to get leaner.
- 1 Hand BB Snatch 155lbs. x 1 each hand ( previous 150 right, 145 left)
- Muscle ups x 7 (Never new I could do them till I tried this month)
- Hand Stand Push-up x 17 (previous best was 10-12)
- Jefferson DL 505 x 1 @ 201lbs (previous best 475)
- BB Push press 285x 1 (previous best 275lbs)
- I hand DB Jerk 130×5 RH, 130×4 LH (Previous only worked with singles)
