Training update 4 July- Road to Nationals

by adam on July 4, 2011

I got less than 5 training days left before I am off to US Grip Nationals in Crooksville OH.

Today my pinching was really good. I took off a few extra days after moving Movement Minneapolis from one unit to another on Friday. We had a nice 105 degree sunny day to move all the equipment and I was wiped from it.

Today my grippers were decent. I tried a lot more work with a 30 mm block. I got a few reps with a #3 with this set, and some decent sets with a 20 mm set block with my Atomgripz quad band

Europinch was very good today. I didn’t want to attempt for a max and burn out, but I could have had a nice shot with my thumbs today. I did a total of 33 reps with 208 lbs, plus a bunch with 198 lbs today. It marked the highest volume I have ever had with over 200 lbs.

My blob and medley training today was the high light of the workout. First I got this Blob clean and press, which is the first time I have ever done it.

Afterwards I did some nice sets of double hex 100 lifts and double blob lifts, plus Inch bell + Blob lifting.

I am getting excited about nationals. The medley will feature some challenges I have never been able to attempt, so there is a chance for some really cool feats and PRs. My primary goal for the grippers is to hit something between 165 and 172….the 20 mm block will change the numbers by a large degree. For my pinch my primary goal is a 225-228 pinch, which will be a contest PR. If I am able to successfully get that I will try for a 231-233 lbs pinch. I have no idea how the wrist roller event will go, other than knowing that it is incredibly draining and it completely smokes the entire lower arm. The final contest event is a one hand deadlift on the plateau buster, and I am confident I will make a good showing on it.

I will likely take only one or two more grip days this month before the day. I have a few contraspecific drills which have been high pay off and I believe those plus extra rest will bring me to my best shape for the contest. Time will tell.

Good luck at nationals Adam – I like watching your progress documented through the videos. Good stuff.

I’m wondering about the contra-specific grip moves you are doing?

I have been wondering lately whether it might be worthwhile trying to find a way to imitate the sort of hand strength that is needed in jamming cracks in climbing.

Good luck with the training. Wish I could have helped you move, I grew up in California so 105 degree heat doesn’t faze me, in fact I miss it.
