Your Words

by adam on May 19, 2011

How in tune with your reality are you?

words are important

Not just lines on paper

Naturally everyone thinks they are.

I would be inclined to let it all slide, except for the staggering number of contradictions I hear people make every single day in conversations.

Words matter.

Yes they do.

Words are a direct window to how well a mind works. Words express how a person feels. Words demonstrate how well someone understands a concept.

In the past I have wrote about my personal work to change my words. I do this in order to change my mind.

Here is the most useful model of changing your mind I have learned.

Actions > Words >Thoughts > Feelings

- Frankie Faires

Want to change your mind or how you feel about something? Start with action.

This is the easiest and fastest method I know of. If there is something better I would like to know about it.

I want you to do a small exercise.

Defining you more then you define them

Please define the following words, and explain how useful you find them in your life.

  • Happy
  • Fair
  • Win
  • Loss
  • Fail
  • Succeed
  • Truth
  • Should
  • Never
  • Always
  • Better
  • Worse
  • Know
  • Cause
  • Why
  • Associated
  • Perception
  • Absolute
  • Relative
  • Wisdom
  • Knowledge

I am interested to know what words you use most often here. Which words do you find are the most powerful, and least useful.

Try that out, drop a comment with your explanation of the words.

I will be back to talk about these words later.

Happy- For me, I use it as a measure of stress. The more stress I carry, the less “happy” I am.
Fair-A place with rides; an ideal for life and competitions (I view both as overlapping) which will never be achieved, even if everyone did steroids.
Win-Succeeding in something I want to succeed in. Competing in something could be a “win” though I do not get first place.
Loss-The opposite of win. Selling myself short, not living up to what I know I can do.
Fail-The feeling I get upon experiencing loss.
Succeed-To “Win.”
Truth-Ambiguous like perfect form and my moral compass.
Should-An imposition of my will upon another that I try to avoid.
Never-A useless word used on surveys, often when said will contradict a potential future action. Not to be used lightly.
Always-Similar to never.
Better-being closer to the “Win”
Worse-Being further away from “Win”
Know-The highest state of understanding about something I have at a given point in time. Subject to change.
Cause-The determining factor of an effect.
Why-Precursory question to deduce the cause to figure out a desired effect.
Associated-Connections used to help sort out what I “know”
Perception-my interpretation of what I “know.”
Absolute-see always and never.
Relative-Family member; also correlated to my perception.
Wisdom-interpretation of experiences and perceptions.
Knowledge-The conglomeration of what I “know.”

I tend to ask why, and look for the cause of something a lot. Questions tend to yield more pathways so I can potentially “know” more stuff. But the more paths I cross, the more of what I “know” is likely to change.

The second word is just what popped into my head when I went down the list. After that is more words if I felt like I had more to say.

My most used word is “um”, next would be “ok?” and then “how do you feel?” I rattle them off most of the day at the gym. I say “tired” often, that may be a winner outside of the work words.

Happy – Myth – I started to feel better when I stopped trying to be happy all the time.

Fair – Loser – Losers call for fairness

Win – Eventually – It may take a while but I always win or redefine victory

Loss – Reduction – A loss of blank is less of blank. A reduction in quantity, quality,
volume…

Fail – Not Yet – Until I’m dead, I can’t chalk anything up as a failure.

Succeed – Yes – Something good comes out of everything.

Truth – Sometimes

Should – Bullshit – Should is a specific form of fairness, it’s equally bullshit.

Never – Tall – I’ve tried but I’m never going to be tall.

Always – Bullshit – Nothing is permant, there can’t be an always.

Better – More – Stronger, faster, smarter, healthier….

Worse – Pain – Worse is loss, eventually leads to pain. Then the pain stops.

Know – Maybe

Cause – Effect – Those words are glued together in my brain. Oh well.

Why – Because – or why not.

Associated – Learned

Perception – Belief

Absolute – Vodka

Relative -Unique – No two people can occupy the same space at the same time, they
will both see a different world.

Wisdom – Discernment

Knowledge – Information

Happy- expressing potential, experiencing movement of results toward goals/idealizations
Fair- what?
Win- a game result, often associated with reward
Loss- a game result, often associated with punishment
Fail- painful distance between intention and results
Succeed- recognition that goals and results are congruent
Truth- obliteration
Should- a recommendation
Never- a generalization expressing permanent absence (represents lack of imagination)
Always- a generalization expressing permanent presence (represents lack of imagination)
Better- movement of results toward goals
Worse- movement of results away from goals
Know- to feel certain of a statement’s validity
Cause- some action that is very frequently associated with a subsequent action
Why- request for a cause
Associated- frequently appear together in a process of conception (often simultaneous)
Perception- conscious experience of stimuli by an agent, the creative process of organizing signals from sensory organs and memory
Absolute- what?
Relative- a term of comparison, a distinction between stimuli and/or concepts
Wisdom- intelligent use of intelligence, meta-intelligence
Knowledge- data and analysis of data; intelligence

Happy – leaning to positive thought; linked to accomplishment which is linked to progress.
Fair – equal footing; always a myth, when you look a little bigger.
Win – overcoming an obstacle; most useful when set against myself.
Loss – failing to overcome an obstacle without gaining from the failure. Not a win doesn’t automatically equal a loss.
Fail – not achieving a desired outcome; failure is most likely when your outcome is based on a concrete concept rather than accumulation of progress.
Succeed – achieving a desired outcome; easiest to succeed if you “move in all directions”.
Truth – individual concept of the nature of a subject; truths can not be transmitted because they are always biased.
Should – a word that expresses emotive desire, rather than logical thought; should is an ineffective way to express how you feel.
Never – no possible chance of occurring/having had occurred; could only be relevant to the past without chance of contradiction.
Always – every time; very misused word, I can’t think of any time “always” has been truly justified in its use.
Better – a greater quantity of a quality judged by the speaker as desirable/lesser of undesirable.
Worse – a lesser quantity of a quality judged by the speaker as desirable/greater of undesirable.
Know – to have a fixed viewpoint on an issue and believe that it is the “truth”, being shut out from any evidence to the contrary.
Cause – a direct stimulus/reaction response, rarer than often believed due to many deviating factors.
Why – attempting to relate an end state to a process beyond doubt or deviation; usually a waste of time.
Associated – relevant to, statistical correlation, withstanding of experimentation related to potential link.
Perception – the limit of an individual’s observational ability and the resultant beliefs. Perception shapes every “fact” we can believe in, as we have no real sense of “truth”.
Absolute – Irrefutable, immutable, unchanging, end point, complete extreme; probably all bullshit.
Relative – measured by comparison to another entity; the apparent nature of all human observation I have encountered.
Wisdom – interpretation of information in a manner which is highly associated with desirable results.
Knowledge – any information; no relation to perceived quality as quality is relative to perception.
