Frankie Faires has written a three part series which I want all of you fitness interested readers to check out.
Reassessing Movement Screens, Part I
Reassessing Movement Screens, Part II
Reassessing Movement Screens, Part III
Now here is a personal request..very specific for all my FMS and other correctional exercise dude brahs and dudette sis’s.
If you believe Frankie is full of shit, or if he has it all wrong, leave a comment on his page. I will caution you that a 2 day course and hand book will not arm you throw down big time. I suppose most of you will just repeat what you have been told or read.
I have screened hundreds and hundreds of people. I do not believe it is all that beneficial. Have there beenĀ successes through the various movement screens? Sure. Given a large enough sample you can always hand pick success stories.
The goal is not to add as much as you can to a clients program. The goal is to get them their results as fast and as safely as possible. How many of your “tools” do you really need to throw at them to do that? What is the current success rate? Are you willing to question your current methods?
If you are, you are able to move forward. If you won’t you will find yourself on an ever increasingly short end of the stick.

Although I didn’t use the FMS. I did use Z-Health.
Explaining to clients that 3-5 reps of ankle tilts and thoracic A/P glides was going to get them to lose weight was always an interesting experience.
I’m kinda dumbfounded now. The $2000 something contraption (“the Lightboard”) they’re using for eye exercises to increase speed, as taught in the 9S speed course. hmm.
Conspicuous silence.
I had an FMS test a long long while ago, the only thing I didn’t pass with flying colours was the overhead barbell squat.
At the time I was really really bothered about this, why couldn’t I do this? OH NO!! What will I do? Hip circles, ankle tilts, thoracic work… yes that will fix this problem for sure!
Now I realise that I really don’t care, because its not a movement I ever do, and don’t really have much intention of ever including in my workouts. I’m sure if I REALLY wanted to get better at it then I could find ways to improve it though.
These days I just care about getting better at the things I want to get better at, the things that don’t cause me issues and the things that make me stronger, move easier and look better with minimal effort.
I couldn’t give two flying pig farts about being able to OHS….but my OHS pattern has still improved over the past 6 months without doing anything to specifically correct it.
