Equipment Recommendations To Build Stronger Hands In Less Time

by adam on October 6, 2010

Need some new toys?

I am an equipment hoarding fool.

I own a lot of gear, and some how more and more gear is finding it’s way in to my human movement emporium.

Being that I own and use all of this awesome fitness gear, I am qualified to share with you some more recommendations.

In my first article on equipment, I wrote about what I believed are the essentials of a home gym. You can learn more by clicking on that link.

Now it’s time to add some of the more exotic recommendations. I am going to lay out three of my favorite pieces of equipment and tell you why these will be awesome for your program.

The Stronger Grip Pinch Lever Block

My weapon of choice in all areas of grip

I got my first pinch lever block in 2007, since then I have added 5 more to my collection, all custom variations. Even now Ryan is making me a new and improved 5.3 version which will be even more awesome.

Why get a lever block?

First of all it allows you to train leveraged wrist and arm work. Most men struggle to plate curl a 25 lbs plate, and utter fail to plate wrist curl it. A lever block allows you to bridge the gap. Why is the important? Because plate curls kick ass for powerful wrists and fingers!

A pinch lever block will allow you to train all of the following movements

  • plate curl
  • reverse plate curl
  • hammer plate curl
  • plate wrist curl
  • reverse plate wrist curl
  • ulnar and radial deviation wrist work from a pinch
  • one hand pinch lifts
  • pinch swings
  • pinch cleans
  • pinch snatches
  • pinch juggling

and much much more.

I have trained with a lever block 2 or 3 times a week now for years. Its use has allowed me to bend bigger steel, shred decks of cards, and dominate my favorite strongman feats. While there are many factors to hand strength, I credit its use as a prime association to my current hand and wrist power.

If you are looking to up your equipment collection, this is my #1 recommendation. Click here now to purchase a pinch lever block.

The Gripbell dumbball

Massive support grip and finger strength right here

This is one of the more interesting pieces of equipment I have played with over the last few years. A pair of dumbbells with a sphere in the center of the handle. Why do have that? Because it brings the thumb and fingers in to play for every movement.

I use my grip bells for several movements

  • Hammer curls
  • Rows
  • Deadlifts
  • Farmers Walks
  • Snatches
  • Clean and pressing
  • upright rows

The shape of the handle brings in to play a very strong support grip feature. You can adjust the challenge of the support grip several ways. You can grab directly around the center of the handle for maximum difficulty, or more towards to the outside for different stresses on the inside or outside of the hand.

Being a plate loaded dumbbell, you can do a million things with these things. One of my goals for most people is to increase hand strength without making drastic changes in someones program. Grip should not be an inconvenience to your program. Inserting the gripbell to your program is such a method.

The Gut Wrench

All you need is a barbell and you have a hundred unique drills with rotational elements

This is one of the those apparatuses you love to play with.

A globe which attaches to the end of a barbell. You load the other end and do a ton of things with it.

  • Pavels famous “Full Contact Twist”
  • Get ups from interesting loading positions
  • Rows
  • Horizontal pressing positions while standing
  • Rotational pressing and pulling patterns
  • Squatting and lunging patterns

The list goes on and on.

The gut wrench is a low cost alternative to the popular West Side Barbell “Landmine” which costs several hundred dollars. Additionally the globe allows you to move around as you train with it across the floor.

For fighters and martial artists there are many applications for this, the only limit is your imagination.

The advantage of all of these tools is they allow you do a lot of movement with them and do not require a lot of additional resistance. For a home gym they will expand your options to a large degree and increase your hand strength with minimal extra effort.

As I said in part I, I think every person should start with a barbell set. Once you have that it is time to upgrade your grip collection and get powerful hands.
