How to Close the #3 Captain of Crush Gripper Faster

by adam on May 22, 2010

The Mash Monster Level I gripper-equal to a #3

Here is the First thing you need to know:

Heavy Duty Hand Grippers must be respected!

Would you mindlessly attempt to do squats with 100% of your max all day? Just keep getting under it and getting crushed over and over? Day in day out- Failing Every time?

I hope not. If you would, you are on the wrong website.

This is that what you are doing if you are picking up a gripper you can’t close and squeezing and squeezing it everytime you see it.  You want those handles to be touching at the close-clicking is better, grinding is the best. We want the SPECIFIC action of the hand being closed on the resistance.

Here are two things you can do right now to make faster progress:

Test out grippers before working on them: Closing the hand is the same as pressing or deadlifting- It is MOVEMENT. We believe any movement can be tested, and personal accounts from trainees worldwide now confirm this belief.

So instead of having “Gripper day” simply test out daily if closing grippers is a good idea. You may find you are able to do more work, or maybe your like me and you are only able to work with heavy grippers once a week. Either way- you are going to be doing more quality work and you will make faster gains.

As a side note- I do not believe it matters what ROM test you use to check, but some people insist on using a toe touch because they think closing the hand would not affect the legs– Here is a clue: Its all touching…

Get Specific on your reps and workloads: If you want to close a #3 COC, repping a #1 will not work. If this does work, more people would be closing the #3 and above strength grippers. Doing endless reps with a light gripper will not build the level of strength required for heavy grippers. You would not expect someone to build up a 500lbs bench press doing 135 for endless reps.

So if you want to work with heavy grippers- work with the best testing gripper for singles to triples.

In the Grip and Rip 2.1 DVD- I cover a detailed block on instruction on closing grippers. To my knowledge there is no video product in the world which covers the amount of information I do in this block. I have used it to close the Beefbuilder Elite and now on to the COC3.5- and taught a number of people to work past the #3.

I would like to recommend one more product- The David Horne Vulcan adjustable gripper. It uses a spring which adjusts through 21 levels. I have been training with the vulcan for several months and it has improved my crush by an incredible amount. CLick here now to read my review of the Vulcan Gripper

If you want to make really fast progress with your grip training, pick up Industrial Strength Grip Vol 1 and learn the foundation of a great grip.

To your hand health and Strength!

I’m expecting more and more people closing the #4 with Biofeedback. Myself included, of course.

Tomas, if you ever close the #4, I’ll give you $100. Go for it!

Thank you, Josh. According to Ironmind, only 5 people have officially closed it so far. I ain’t afraid of no COC #4!

Tomas

On the Mash Monster side (gripboard) I think an additional 5 have closed it from a MM set- Aaron Morton, Steve Gardener, Aaron Corcorran, Chad Woodal, and Paul Knight. I think Paul and Steve have the strongest chance of being the next men to close it.

The #4 Cert is kind of stupid. The credit card set puts people with average size hands or below at a huge disadvantage. To my knowledge no one has closed the #4 from the CCS- the 5 on the list all did it under the old rules.

Someone will, but most of the really bad ass gripper guys are working on the MM ladder or Hornes cert–better rules

I have smaller hands. I’m excited to see what you have to say about grippers on Grip ‘n’ Rip 2.1!

CoC #2.5 is down left and right and that was before I implemented biofeedback. Once GNR 2.1 arrives combined with consistent testing I’m positive the #3 will fall soon. That will be a nice monkey to toss off my back.

I remember a couple of years ago when I meat him, A guy named Adam was not even really into gippers. I have the #4 down to 3/8 of an inch. It is not a CC set. And I really don’t care. I just want to close the bastard.
