Pride Of Ownership

by josh on April 7, 2010

Pride of ownership is a term I hear a lot. Essentially, it means you are proud of the things you own. You take care of your possessions.

If you care for your house and maintain it, you demonstrate pride of ownership.

If you wash your car and don’t turn it into a trash can, that is pride of ownership.

If you shine your shoes…(vibrams get a pass)

You get the idea.

The thing is, we don’t really own any of those things. Why? Because they can be taken away in an instant. You might buy a pair of shoes, but if someone steals them, they’re gone as if you never had them. You were just in charge of them for a while.

But–

Body and mind

Nobody can take your body away from you, and nobody can take your mind. And yet, I believe these are the two areas where pride of ownership is most often neglected.

I know people who would spend an hour polishing an Xbox but can’t find the time to eat a healthy meal.

People who haven’t read a book in five years but can tell you who does the actor’s hair on Joey.

Very, very important stuff.

People who can tell you how many STDs the latest Hollywood It guy/girl has had, but can’t tell you which half of its century the Civil War was fought in.

People who want to “be fit,” but do nothing but say the words.

Make no mistake: this does not make them bad people. And at times, I have been every one of these people. Sadly, it is what passes for normal these days.

If you are more proud of  a possession–and your actions demonstrate this!– than you are of your body and mind, I don’t care what you believe or who you’re praying to–this is a form of sacrilege. This is the opposite of honoring your biology and what you are intended for.

This is the opposite of The Movemement.

Honor yourself. Honor the things that matter. Enjoy all the other stuff that makes life fun, but don’t let it take precedence over your body and mind.

Don’t.

Buddha said to take good care of your body for it is your vehicle to enlightenment. I’ve found the present quality of my life is positively correlated with the current state of my mind-body-complex. The mind and the body are deeply entwined. Such that I feel it can be said we are both what we eat and what we think. I guess it could be said we are also how we move. It’s all a complex feedback spiral which is either spiraling up or spiraling down.

Budda- full of shit. The product of this religion is people who deny themsevles the things they want in life because of guilt and shame and other social control measures.

Sadly, pretty much the same can be said, in my opinion, for any major philosophy or religion.
Thing is though, I think some people need a lot of help distinguishing between things they want and things worth wanting. Gotta try to get it from somewhere.

Dont worry, I get around to bashing all religions in due time.

That’s called throwing the baby out with the bath water. People do all manner of stupid shit often in the name of something they have failed to understand.

Fantastic! Completely true, and what a great excuse, er, I mean reason to let the house get untidy and the yard look unloved. LOL

Really cool post, and oh so true.

“If you shine your shoes…(vibrams get a pass)” HAHA that was funny – even though I’m a huge fan of Vibram FFs ;P

All in all it always start with ourselves. We can’t possibly reach our full potential in other areas if we don’t take care of what life really gave us – body, mind and soul.
