Week VII of RTK, being sick, and enjoying the explosive block

by adam on November 1, 2009

This week I was laid out hard with aches, pain, fever, nasty shit coming out of my nose, and a coughing fit which left me experiencing a pain like a fractured skull. Not much fun. I am happy to report i feel much better going in to week VIII.

Some thoughts on training when you feel bad.

#1- cut volume down. Your body is already stressed out, no need to add more weight to a heavy load.

#2- Only do what you want to do. When you’re sick you probably do not feel like doing much- so don’t do much. During this last week i only did a little bit on work days, and only what i truly wanted to do. I hear people say “Man i don’t want to run today, but i have to” My response is always no you don’t. Not today.

#3- Sleep as much as you can. I slept really bad all week, but even bad sleep is better then no sleep when your sick.

#4- Eat more. I have no words of wisdom on what you should eat other then test it. When you sick i will add eat more of what tests well.

On to RTK. I looked forward to returning to the explosive block at the start of week VII. The long cycle is a new pattern to me and many lessons are waiting to be learned through its pursuit. I don’t feel i have a had fair assessment testing this week while sick, and i plan on re-testng reps this Tuesday. The 40kg bells are feeling a lot easier to manage this week despite the illness. The 32kg bells feel really good, and I have a much better flow to the pattern which i think you will see if you view this film. Compare it to week IV’s long cycle for better technique and rhythm.

Looking strong Adam, despite the illness factor. :) The song from Braveheart was fitting for the epicness of double LCCJ.

PS, Doug says, "Look, it's Adam Glass!"
